TEETH WHITENING and ORAL HYGIENE

TEETH WHITENING & ORAL HYGIENE

Change Your Smile with Professional Tooth Whitening at Belich Dental:

Tooth whitening is a popular cosmetic treatment designed to give you a brighter, more confident smile. Discolouration can occur due to aging, coffee, tea, red wine, smoking, or even antibiotic use during tooth development.
While professional cleanings by our skilled oral health therapists and hygienists can effectively remove surface stains, deeper discolouration requires more. Our tailored whitening treatments reach beneath the surface to give you a noticeably whiter smile—safely and effectively.

Whitening FAQs:

Which option is best for me?

The best whitening approach depends on your individual needs. In-chair whitening offers immediate results, while take-home trays provide gradual whitening and allow for longer treatment periods, which can be especially helpful for certain types of discolouration, like grey-toned teeth.

For teeth that may require more specialised care, alternative cosmetic treatments- such as dental bonding or veneers- can offer excellent results. Our dental professionals will guide you through the options to find the best solution for your smile.

Are there any side effects?

Some patients may experience mild sensitivity or gum irritation, but these are usually temporary and last between 12 and 24 hours. Our dental professionals can recommend products to ease any discomfort.

Can whitening change the colour of dental restorations?

Tooth whitening treatments are designed for natural teeth and won’t alter the colour of dental restorations like fillings, crowns, veneers, or bridges. These restorations will remain the same shade they were before whitening, which may create slight contrasts if they were matched to your previous tooth colour.

How long will my results last?

The longevity of your results depends on what foods and drinks you consume and your oral care routine. Avoid staining foods and drinks like coffee, tea, red wine, and berries post-treatment.

Any whitening tips?

  • Maintain your results by following post-whitening care instructions.
  • Consider touch-up treatments to keep your smile bright over time.
  • Everyone’s teeth are different—if you have deeper stains or grey-toned teeth, longer treatment times may be needed.
  • Safety First: Make sure your whitening treatment is done by a registered professional from the NZDA or NZDHA to ensure safety and quality.

Oral Hygiene
The Benefits of Seeing an Oral Health Therapist or Dental Hygienist at Belich Dental
Dental hygiene is the foundation of good oral health and plays an important role in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Regular dental hygiene visits not only help prevent gum disease and tooth decay but also support long-term oral health through professional cleaning, education, and tailored advice.
What Do Oral Health Therapists/ Dental Hygienists Do?
At Belich Dental, our Oral Health Therapists and Hygienists perform thorough cleanings that go beyond what brushing and flossing can achieve. They focus on removing plaque and calculus (tartar) that can accumulate in hard-to-reach areas, reducing the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.
• Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth after eating or drinking. If not removed regularly, the bacteria produce acids that can lead to tooth decay and gum inflammation.
• Calculus (tartar) is hardened plaque that forms if plaque isn’t removed. It firmly attaches to teeth and can only be removed by a dental professional using specialised tools.
The Importance of Removing Plaque and Calculus:
If left untreated, plaque and calculus can lead to gum disease, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss. Regular hygiene appointments are essential for maintaining not just the health of your teeth but also the supporting bone and gum tissues.
Advanced Cleaning with Airflow Technology:
Our oral health therapists and hygienists also utilise Airflow—a modern cleaning system that uses a combination of air, warm water, and fine powder to gently and effectively remove plaque, surface stains (from coffee, tea, and smoking), and biofilm. Airflow is less abrasive than traditional cleaning methods, providing a more comfortable experience while achieving exceptional results.
Tailored Oral Health Plans:
During your visit, our oral health therapists and hygienists will assess your gums and overall oral health. They will create a personalised care plan, including how often you should schedule hygiene appointments to maintain optimal oral health.
