You can now smile with our Tooth Whitening Options!

Tooth whitening lightens your teeth and is a popular cosmetic option to improve their appearance.

There are many reasons for tooth discolouration. The most common are aging and the consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea, and red wine. Tooth discolouration can also occur during tooth formation due to the use of certain antibiotics.

What are the options?

01  In-chair whitening

All our oral health therapists perform the in-chair whitening. They will apply a 40% hydrogen peroxide whitening solution to your teeth for up to 60 minutes. The gel formula allows it to be applied without the need for lights or lasers, which can further dehydrate your teeth.

02 Take home-tray whitening

Impressions of your teeth are taken and custom-fitted upper and lower trays (they look like a thin mouthguard) are made for you to place the whitening solution into. The strength of the solutions varies, but most people use 6% Hydrogen Peroxide and they are worn for approximately 10 days, 2 times a day, 30 minutes each time.

03 Opalescence GO pre-packaged trays (box of 10 trays)

Opalescence Go Whitening trays are pre-filled, disposable trays that contain a whitening gel. You insert the comfortable trays in your mouth and wear them for the recommended time. (see more in the Opalescence pamphlet).

What option do I choose and what are the risks?

Most researchers say that take home-tray whitening provides the best results. However, it is important to follow whitening and post-whitening instructions. If you are short on time, in-chair whitening is a good start. The take-home trays are great for maintenance and allows you to monitor the right shade for you.

Keep in mind that everyone has different tooth shades. If you have darker or grey tone teeth, it is going to take longer to whiten your teeth.

With modern whitening treatments, the only real risk is sensitivity due to your teeth drying out. Tooth sensitivity usually lasts between 12 and 24 hours and with the help of your dental professional, sensitivity can be minimised.

How long does the tooth whitening last for?

After and during treatment, your teeth enamel will act like a sponge. To ensure that your whitening results last for a long as possible, it is essential to avoid food and beverages that have the potential to re-stain your teeth. These include, but are not limited to; tea, coffee, red wine, coke, berries, curries and beetroot. And of course, smoking will also stain the surface of your teeth.

Be sure to follow the post-whitening instructions. While relapses after teeth whitening treatments are natural, they should be gradual, so avoid exposing your teeth to various staining agents that might accelerate the process.

Whitening Tips

For a more natural look, try to match your tooth shade to the whites of your eyes. This will ensure that your mouth is not the focal point.

For sensitivity during tooth whitening, talk with our dental professionals about using Tooth Mousse.

Please note that Tooth Mousse is not suitable with people with a milk protein allergy or a sensitivity to benzoate preservatives.

It is important to have your whitening assessment and treatment undertaken by a registered professional of the NZDA or NZDHA to ensure all the correct safety and standards are met.

Oral Hygiene

Why should I see a dental hygienist?

Dental hygiene is the building block of good dental health and is vital to maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Regular visits to the hygienist can support you in maintaining your oral health over the long term through education and removal of plaque and calculus.
Most people have heard terms Plaque and calculus – but what do they mean?

Plaque is a sticky substance that forms on your teeth after we eat and drink. The bacteria in plaque secrete acids that cause tooth decay and irritated gums (gum disease). Most plaque is removed by the regular brushing and flossing your teeth. If left, plaque hardens to create calculus which can only be removed by a dentist or hygienist.

It is important that plaque and calculus is removed as if left untreated, it can lead to bone loss and loss of teeth.

The hygienists at Belich Dental will assess your gums and will discuss with you how often you should be seen for optimal oral health.
